Week 3 on the farm: Growing and replacing - October 6

Plants are growing  and even more planting

Within the last few weeks the plants have

started to take and have been steadily growing.

The cucumbers have grown a few inches

and have started to grow up the trellis. We will continue to train them upwards to give the plant more surface area to grow. We hope

that as the plants grow up they will have more space on the plant to produce more fruit.

The next thing that we saw was the beans that we planted

finally sprouted. We planted them in 2 rows and the majority of them sprouted. They were an assortment of three different kinds of bush beans. It took about 2 weeks after planting. After they sprouted we put a small amount of hay around the base to keep the weeds down.

During this time, we planted eggplant transplants that have finally reached maturity in the greenhouse. We decided to plant them in two rows close together. Our hope is that they will reach maturity and start producing fruit before the cold sets in. Currently it's still 80 degrees outside so the growth has been pretty steady. After planting we spread hay around the base to keep the weeds down and retain more watering the bed.

From the first week of planting

the pepper plants look pretty good.
Not much growth but they look like
they are maintaining healthy growth
and have started rooting in the soil. The marigolds
that we inter-cropped with them seem to
be healthy and growing as well.

The Zinnias and summer squash that we planted  in the first week have been growing as well. Not much to say except that everything looks healthy and fine. Nothing so far in any of our plants look infected with any disease. I know it seems pretty early  but so far so good.
